Letters, mainly 1870, from lawyer James E. Webb in Greensboro, Ala. to his wife, Zemma, who was near Gadsden, Ala. Topics discussed include the weather, how much he misses her, news of family and friends, his fruit and vegetable produce, and the coming of the railroad to Greensboro. Especially interesting is the letter dated 1870 Aug. 21 in which Webb, writing from Greensboro, describes to his wife the Chinese men he saw working on the railroad near Birmingham, Ala. Letter, 1873 Sept. 3, from Webb in Eutaw, Ala. to his wife discusses the improvement of train transportation.

James E. Webb, lawyer, was born in 1840 in Greene Co., Ala. He graduated from University of Ala. in 1859. He served in the Civil War, 1861-1865. Apparently he practiced law in Greensboro, Ala. from 1865 to 1885 when he formed a law partnership with John T. Tillman in Birmingham, Ala. In 1866 he married Zemma Cresswell.
